There has been lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth since folks ran out and brought their spanking brand new red and shiny cricut cake machines home and realized they did not know how the heck to make it work. Well the key is using the right gumpaste, that’s it! Gumpaste! You must have the perfect textured gumpaste for the machine to cut nicely and cleanly.
Where do you get this gumpaste you ask? Right out of your own kitchen using this recipe from my friend Linda McClure, remember the post I wrote about her class, and about how she was the one that created this method of using the cricut machine for cutting gumpaste. Well, she has been so gracious to share her techniques and recipe on how to make this gumpaste with the rest of us with a tutorial she has now just posted on Youtube.
This Gumpaste works beautifully with any electrical cutting machines. I have tried every type of gumpaste and the cricut cake frosting sheets… nothing worked like this gumpaste
But let me save you the trouble of searching for those videos.
And if yah love it don’t forget to leave a comment for Linda on youtube!
MERRY CHRISTMAS CAKERS!!!!!
Another thing about the Cake Machines: People are buying them so that they can also cut paper. What no one is telling us is that you need the replacement blade and housing (with adjustable depth cut levels) in order to d this. This housing costs 30 on the Cricut website and 14.00 shipping fees!!
THIS IS NOT THE DEEP HOUSING BLADE ASSEMBLY THAT IS FOR CUTTING THICK MATERIALS.
I know this because I have both types of machines, the blade that comes with the Cake Cricuts has no settings and is set up to cut frosting and fondants, not paper!! Maybe you can pass this along to your posters!!
I don't like the cricut cake blade it's too big, I have been using the deep cut blade with the blue housing, which can also cut paper, and I brought mines at Michael's for about $14. Good Advise.
I need some help and clarification. I have the Cricut Cake machine and love it, but want to be able to use it for paper crafting, which I’m clueless about, so I can get more use out of my machine. So what exactly do I need to look for and buy? The blue housing and deep cut blade & sticky mats? Thanks for your help. Teresa
Yes you will need the stick mats and the deep cut blade if you are using cards, you can use the regular blade as well (not the cake blade).
This videos are very helpfull. thanks a lot for showing them to us. I just buy the cricut cake machine, but i dont have a pasta machine, can I roll my self the gum paste to use it in the cricut? what would you recomend?
I have the Cricut cake mini and I cut both fondant and I mainly use it for paper, I use the deep housing blade in the blue deep housing holder, it's worth the money to buy the separate pieces, you also need the sticky mats of course, but again, worth the money.
I am having a diffult time finding the Tylose powder in my area, do you have a suggestion where I could purchase it online?
You can buy it on Shop Bakers Nook online…
Loved watching this , what a great teacher I guess I won’t get rid of my cricut yet , great tips Thank you. I shall try this .:))
A big thank you Linda – I ended up putting my machine on the shelf, quite annoyed at myself for being led down the garden path so to speak. I had thought there would be more information and instruction on how to use these but after the first disaster with the premade frosting sheets which seemed to heal themselves after being cut??? what was that….??? I quietly just gave up and went onto gumpaste flowers. I noticed that Michaels has reduced the product that supports the machine and I see that Walmart has a reduced supply but better than Michaels. Where is Martha Stewart on the support for these machines? – as the big sponsor of the Cricut Cake I would have thought that there would have been a better support and instruction follow up system. So a big thanks to Linda for sharing this because I was pretty much resigned to using this as a door stop!
I’ve been cutting miaaretls about 1/8th of an inch thick with this blade. I find I have to use to multicut function to make sure there aren’t any little spots that didn’t get cut completely though. I also have found that the thicker miaaretls need a little extra sticky to stay in place on the mat (makes sense, since you’re cutting through more material at a time there will be more resistance). I just use some double sided sticky tape, and it works just fine. On a side note, it fits in the Cricut Cake machine, so if you just get the sticky mats you can use it to cut out papers/leather/foam board, whatever, instead of just cutting food items. I know Provo Craft says not to use the Cricut Cake for non food items, but they are full of crap. If you use a separate mat and blade, then NONE of your machine will come in contact with both your food items and your paper items. Besides, even if you used the same mats/blade, if you are making things out of paper that is SO toxic that a microscopic sliver or the residue of the dye could make you sick then maybe you should reconsider operating the machine in your house! I’m pretty sure anything that toxic would have to carry a warning label anyway So as long as you aren’t flavoring your coffee with scrapbooking glue, I sure you’ll be fine. Provo Craft just stands to make MUCH more cash if you buy both a machine for both food items and paper products, so of course they’ll say you shouldn’t use it for both.
Thank you it was very helpful tip. I was really excited when my husband bought me the cricut cake machine. i first used it with sugar sheets…didnt work, then fondant and it wasnt cutting a clean cut. cant wait to try the gum paste. Thank You again.
Bea
Thanks for the awesome tips!! I have a question though, what is the minimum amount of time that you let the rolled and cut pieces of gumpaste rest before cutting? I only have 3 mats and neet to do a lot of cutting, would an hour or two be sufficient? Thanks!
Hi Ladies, I hope someone can help me, I’m getting a Cricut cake mini for christmas now I’ve seen you can get ink for them too what is this for?
Are they worth the money?
Many Thanks
Steph xx
The baking sheets you store the gumpaste on I dont seem to be able to find in the UK. What is the manufacturers name?
Thanks
Regards
Carol
I bought mine on Amazon.
This was an icredible post. I am going to dig out my cake cricut and give it another whirl! You have given me the confidence to do it. Thanks for figuring it out and sharing it with all of us. I hate investing in something I can’t use! Going to share this with all my friends at Yummy Arts!
I got a cake decorating cricut for retirement gift from my department and having a heck of a time cutting without it all bunching up. I am excited to try this new gumpaste recipe. can you mix this with have gumpaste and half fondant. what if you don’t havea pasta maker just keep rolling until it is thin enough? r the cheap pasta makers easy to use I might have to go buy one. I really enjoyed the deomonstration and going to try to make gumpaste tonight. I really want my cricut to work looks like fun and I am just starting making cakes for friends and this would be handy. took cake classes at Michaels and loved them so want to further my knowledge on different ways to decorate. thanks again
